Tom Rush - Weekend Fun

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Since it’s a long weekend, here’s some fun from singer/songwriter Tom Rush.

He’s performing here at Humphrey’s Half Moon Resort in San Diego. They have a tremendous summer concert series each year. We were lucky to have a room right behind the stage one year and although I didn’t see her, I had a wonderful time listening to Joan Baez.

Hope you enjoy Tom’s little song - and don’t forget where you heard it.

Passengers Stranded - Worst Ever Travel Story

Monday, August 10th, 2009

We’ve all had our share of travel craziness, but this one seems to outshine all the rest.

47 people have a “you can’t top this one” story to tell for a long time.

Double-Double Animal Style - In ‘n Out Secrets

Monday, May 25th, 2009

It’s happened more than once:

I am sitting on an airport shuttle at LAX when someone from out of town will ask, “Where’s the nearest In ‘n Out?”

This iconic fast food brand with nothing save burgers and fries on the menu is an amazing story in consistency and loyalty to the workers who maker it happen. The food is decadently tasty, but flavor isn’t the only reason an average store outsells other QSR brands in the same neighborhood.

It’s the people behind the counter who make the real difference. You can tell they’re treated fairly and respected by their managers. Starting wages at In ‘n Out are above the industry average and unit managers typically earn over $100,000 a year. Turnover is very low, which translates to better tasting food because the person frying your burger or salting your fries isn’t practicing on YOUR order. It’s extremely rare to see an In ‘n Out store with dirty floors, over-filled trash bins or a confused kitchen crew.

Writing this is making me hungry. Go ahead and read this piece from AOL’s Daily Finance while I jump in the car and head for my nearest In ‘n Out.

Suicide Boat Ride

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

The assignment was to conduct a Strategy Audit and do some Executive Coaching for the Century 21 real estate office in Nicaragua. I was able to visit the country three times over the course of the two-year project and my first trip included this ride on a 20-foot panga boat to Little Corn Island, a tiny piece of sand 45 kilometers off Nica’s eastern coast.

There’s nothing touched up on this video. It was captured on the phone camera of Gaspar Guadamoz, who can be seen near the end pointing the camera at himself.

Keep in mind while watching this that I have never learned to swim and am helpless in water much deeper than a hot tub. Yes - I will go anywhere and do (just about) anything to help people think differently.

Don’t despise white bread

Friday, May 8th, 2009

The 18 minutes you set aside to watch Lousie Fresco share some counter-intuitive thoughts about agriculture in the 21st century will be time well-spent.

I was mesmerized, not by the specific content of her talk, but by her very reasoned argument against conventional wisdom and in favor of Wonder Bread.

Watch and hear her say, “we need to think differently.”

Shattering the Status Quo at Denny’s

Monday, April 13th, 2009

This Time Magazine piece about some innovative ideas at Denny’s shows that the oft-maligned diner chain isn’t afraid to take chances and try different things.

And it isn’t all about free food. I’m especially intrigued by the way Denny’s is reportedly changing it’s approach to the “bar crowd.” It makes sense.

As part of my Executive Coaching and Strategy Planning Retreats, I help leaders visualize how their organization might benefit if they broke some of their own traditions. Playing rock music and treating tipsy customers as welcome guests won’t cost Denny’s a dime, but it could introduce a whole new generation to the glories of Moons Over My Hammy.
